We were saddened to hear about the death of William (Bill) Mitchell, former dean of MIT’s School of Architecture and Planning. Mitchell’s innovative views on incorporating technology and design have made him one of the world’s leading urban theorists.  MIT said that Mitchell, “likened tomorrow’s cities to living organisms or very-large-scale robots, with nervous systems that enable them to sense changes in the needs of their inhabitants and external conditions, and respond to these needs.”

Recently Mitchell spoke to Metropolis Magazine about reinventing the automobile. He said his team was trying to introduce ultra lightweight, battery-powered vehicles into dense urban markets.

A memorial service will be held tomorrow, June 16th at 10am at MIT in the new Media Lab Complex, 75 Amherst Street, Cambridge, MA.
